Like I said earlier, I love both Wilco and Son Volt, so in the interest of fairness, I wanted to give you a little live Son Volt. I listen to this a lot while I grade papers (like I'm doing this afternoon). I know that Jay doesn't sing pretty, but it does my soul good to hear his raspy voice singing with conviction. I'll try to dig out some Uncle Tupelo next.

WILCO - GUN

You can tell an awful lot about an Americana fan (and a music fan in general) by how they feel about the breakup of Uncle Tupelo. Generally, most people fall into one of two camps. They love Jay Farrar or Jeff Tweedy, and then they feel the need to fight and argue over why they chose one over the other. If the person loves Tweedy, then there is a second piece of critical information needed... do they love "Being There" era Wilco (Tweedy's post-Tupelo outfit) or Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" era Wilco. I happen to love both Farrar and Tweedy, but I won't lie. I love early Wilco and find new Wilco kind of hit or miss. Here is some early Wilco for you, featuring my all-time favorite Uncle Tupelo song to boot.

Vigilantes of Love - Solar System (live)

This afternoon, i'm going to shout out to a few of the greatest Americana bands you've ever seen, and none of them rank higher than this band out of Athens Georgia, The Vigilantes of Love. I chose this particular version of the song to kick off with because it features Kenny Hutchins on lead guitar. Next to Callie Harmon, i think Kenny is probably the best Americana guitarist I've ever heard. To be great like those guys you have to walk the line between dirty rock and classic country, and Kenny does it perfectly. There have been many VOL lineups, but without a doubt, this was my all-time favorite. Bill Mallonee hadn't given up hope yet and the band still oozed with a coolness that is so hard to find. If memory serves me correctly though, this was the final tour with this lineup, with the final straw being the gear being stolen in Scotland. I like to stay locked in this moment though, and pretend that this amazing band actually made it and got the recognition they so richly deserved. No band has had a greater impact on my life than the Vigilantes...

Speaking of Frank, here is the greatest song he ever did in his solo career. (in my humble opinion...) It also happens to be the biggest single he had. This is usually not the case with great songwriters. Typically, their singles suck. Not this one.

I was absolutely insane for this album, and this song in particular, though I know a lot of people thought the band sucked and the song sucked. All of them can stand down, because this song rocks. Yes it does. I was completely in love with Kim Deal at this point...a real head case. I kept wondering, "What was Frank Black THINKING?!?!?!?!"

This one reminds me of a very specific time in my life. I used to hang out with these guys and participate in something called "The Night Of The 9". We would each buy 8 pints of Guinness and then split a final pack of four, yielding us 9 pints each. Then, we would turn the music up and drink and drink. I don't remember why I thought that was ok, but that's who I was then. I had just broken up with a girl (or she had broken up with me...) and I remember her coming by that crazy apartment in the bad part of town. She stood at the bottom of the stairway and cried and yelled at me about my drinking problem. I yelled back at her and threw empty Guinness cans at her car from the balcony and reminded her that she was the reason i was drinking in the first place. (Needless to say, it didn't end with us getting back together...) Later that night, I remember Seth Baxter coming in and putting a blanket over me and saying, "Bro, if you don't stop drinking like this, you're going to kill yourself." The next morning I quit. Anyway, I remember this song playing that night...so there you go.

Today I'm going to share a few songs that aren't really that great but are special to me. This one was such an overplayed radio single that I have no choice but to hate it. Still, the song and I have a past. I was in Wisconsin with my Mom and my brother. I don't remember why. What I do remember was that it was just after Dad died, and we visited House On The Rock that trip. They fell asleep and I was driving through that lonely Wisconsin wilderness/farm area that gets you back to Indiana. This song came on the radio and i began to weep. I cried and cried as they slept. I have no idea what it was about this song that makes me think of my father, but it does.
